However, if you want to make it at home, we’ve got some good news: it’s actually surprisingly easy to do! However, we strongly recommend that you stick to the following tips and tricks to ensure your cold brew coffee making efforts go to plan. After all, few things are more frustrating than finding that your exciting new cup of coffee doesn’t quite live up to expectations.
How to Make Cold Brew Coffee
In too many cases, buying cold brew coffee from the shop can be a lacklustre experience – and, even more worryingly, the coffee doesn’t taste as good as it ought to! Luckily, though, it’s absolutely possible (easy, even) to make cold brew coffee at home with the right approach. We’ve outlined some key things you need to know as follows to help with this.
#1 Grinding Your Coffee
First of all, you’ll need to grind your coffee beans (if you haven’t already purchased them). For the sake of making top-quality cold brew coffee, coarsely ground coffee beans will likely be the best bet to consider.
For most cold brew coffee recipes, you’ll want to end up with around one cup of ground coffee beans. Remember: if you grind the coffee beans too finely, this may make the flavour of your cold brew coffee overpowering.
#2 Adding Water
Once your cold brew coffee beans are ground up, the next step is to add water. You’ll want to add around four times the amount of water as you had coffee grounds; in this case, we’ll need four cups of water. This equates to around 900mls.
#3 Stir the Mixture
Now, you’ll want to stir the mixture. Thorough stirring is very important to ensure that all of the coffee grounds get thoroughly saturated; if you struggle to stir the mixture well in the current container, you may want to transfer it to another beaker or bowl.
How you choose to stir the mixture is up to you. You could even shake it, if it’s in a sealed bottle or pot! So long as your chosen method results in all of the coffee grounds getting saturated with water, that’s fine.
#4 Steep the Mixture
Once you’re happy that the coffee grounds are thoroughly saturated with water, you now need to steep the mixture to allow the coffee flavours to infuse with the water. Make sure your bowl or pot is covered during the steeping process so that no nasty debris from outside gets in, which could contaminate your cold brew coffee and definitely reduce the appeal!
Ideally, you’ll want to steep your cold brew coffee for at least ten hours, but ideally twelve. Most people will steep their coffee in the refrigerator during this time, but if it’s not too hot, you can technically leave it out of the fridge on the counter instead.
By now, the coffee should be fully steeped, so it’s nearly time to enjoy it! Strain the coffee through a flour sack or cheesecloth to remove the coffee grounds. This will help separate the grounds from the liquid, giving you the delicious steeped coffee water to enjoy!
Make sure you have a suitably large collecting bowl beneath the strainer to avoid losing any of your cold brew coffee. You should ideally also leave the strained mixture for a while after straining. This will allow any residue on the cloth to drip through.
If you’re ready to serve up your cold brew coffee, there are several options you could consider here. Most people will dilute their cold brew coffee with cold milk (or milk alternative) or add a touch of double cream for a more indulgent drink! If not, why not consider using extra water or even a good-quality milk substitute to create your final drink?
Whichever method you use, it’s important to dilute the cold brew coffee mixture thoroughly. Drinking it straight will be incredibly strong. But, of course, everyone’s preference for final dilution strength will vary slightly – so, try to dilute to taste.
Not ready to serve just yet? No worries – it will usually last for around a week when stored in the fridge.
As an Alternative: Using a French Press
If you’re not entirely sure the above method is right for you, then you can actually make cold brew coffee in a French Press as well. This is surprisingly simple; just steep the coffee for around ten hours or so (overnight is ideal) before pressing it to remove the liquid. Chill and store until you’re ready to serve!
